Golf

Golf is a unique sport played using a club and ball sport in which players aim to complete holes on various courses in as few strokes as possible.

Stretching back as far as the 15th century originating in Scotland, the game has developed into becoming a worldwide sport played by people of all ages. A general game of golf at PGA (Professional Golfers Association) level is played over 18 holes, each containing unique features, such as rough (longer grass), sand bunkers and water hazards and being of a different layout to the other holes, each presenting its own challenge. There are many various types of the game, such as stroke play (the most common form), match play, skins, stableford and so on.

Each hole in golf is classified by its par, which refers to the expected amount of shots a professional golfer should be able to complete the hole in. Holes can either be par 3, 4 or 5, with the main deciding factor generally being length of the hole. Managing this in one less stroke is referred to as a birdie, and taking one extra stroke to complete the hole is referred to as a bogey. These are the three most common forms of scoring at a professional level, however there are other terms for different amounts of strokes.

Golf uses a handicap system, which is a numerical measure of an amateur golfer's ability to complete a round. A handicap usually reflects the number of strokes more than par that a player would complete an 18 hole game in. For example, if a course has an 18 hole par of 72, and a player on average completes the round in 80 strokes, their handicap would be 8. Handicaps are used in net forms of the game, where either the player's score for that hole or round is adjusted to reflect their expected capability, which is then compared to other player's scores in relation to their handicap.

Golf is becoming an increasingly popular sport worldwide, with more and more countries producing more golf courses every year. As of 2015, Australia was recorded as having 1628 official golf courses, so there is one available to everyone!

From personal experience, Golf is definitely a sport worth giving a go for everyone, as it is not particularly strenuous on the body, however provides a suitable method of exercise as it can be used for hours of walking, as well as getting outside. It is also extremely competitive, and is renowned for being one of the more mentally challenging common sports. It is therefore highly recommended that you give this sport a go if you get the chance, you won't regret it!
