State of Origin

NRL: State of Origin

Perhaps the most far-reaching competition within the game, being received by the largest variety in audience demographic, State of Origin can be considered one of the biggest and most vital parts of sports culture in Australia. The series has at times drawn larger Australian television numbers than any other sporting event in the year.

History

The State of Origin competition between New South Wales and Queensland was instituted in 1982, with Queensland winning the first series, as well as the following two 2-1. Since the inception of the competition, Queensland have won the series 20 times, New South Wales on 13 occasions with 2 series being drawn. On both occasions where the series was drawn, Queensland retained the shield due to being the winner of the previous year.

Queensland have shown dominance in recent history, winning 10 of the previous 11 series, with a streak of 8 in a row finally being broken by New South Wales in 2014. Many have been brought in for NSW to get the job done and have fallen short. Only time will tell if they can make a statement this year and turn the momentum to their favour.

Whether you're a die-hard fan, or watch the game casually, this years State of Origin clash is one you will not want to miss! Catch the series opener May 31st!
